UC Global Food Initiative
UC President Napolitano and chancellors from all 10 campuses have taken another courageous step towards a more sustainable future by creating the UC Global Food Initiative, a program committed to expanding research and sharing best practices to improve the food system. The Initiative aims to “rally the broad UC community across a wide range of disciplines to work toward putting the world on a path to sustainably and nutritiously feed itself.”
This initiative aims to rally the broad UC community across a wide range of disciplines to work toward putting the world on a path to sustainably and nutritiously feed itself. Goals include:
- Identifying best practices and sharing widely within UC, California, the nation and the world;
- Using the power of UC research and extension to help individuals and communities access safe, affordable and nutritious food while sustaining our natural resources; and
- Deploying UC’s research to shape, impact and drive policy discussions around food issues at the local, statewide, national and international levels.
On our campus, Hospitality and Dining Services is providing system-wide leadership on zero waste dining facilities, several school-based centers and institutes are leading related scholarly work, and student leaders are addressing campus food security.
