EarthReps Winter 2019 Speaker Series for Leadership and Professional Development

During Winter Quarter 2019, UCI Housing Sustainability is pleased to host engaging panelists working on pressing social and environmental issues on campus and around Orange County. Speakers will share about their sustainability career paths, current issues, lessons for aspiring planners and activists, as well as opportunities for further engagement.

Sessions will meet in the Student Center G460 Conference Room. Sessions are free and open to the campus community.

Week 2 – January 14, Sustainability on Campus Tour

Learn about UCI’s sustainability efforts and our journey to becoming the #1 Cool School in the nation by taking a sustainability walking tour around campus with EarthReps Coordinator, Esmeralda Hic.

Please note, the Week 2 session will be moving outside. Meet in Student Center G460 promptly at 10:30am to catch the tour.

Week 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Week Events

Environmental Justice related opportunities will take place throughout Week 3 on campus and include events held in partnership with UCI Community Resilience, the Cross-Cultural Center and more. 

We are excited to feature an Environmental Justice discussion with visiting poet-MC, activist, and cultural worker Will See on Wednesday, January 23rd at 3:45-4:45pm in the Global Sustainability Resource Center (Student Center G464).

The discussion will be followed by the What the Eyes Don’t See: A Process of Uncovering the Flint Water Crisis event. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the pediatrician that helped uncover Flint’s water crisis, 5pm, Crystal Cove Auditorium.

Week 4 January 28, Environmental Justice Perspectives

Stop in for a session to debrief and plan inclusive collaborations around environmental justice issues from our campus home. Guest panelists include Kathy Dong, Student Development Coordinator at the Cross-Cultural Center; Bruce Aquino, Residence Life Coordinator in Mesa Court and Director of the Sierra Program; and Navjyot Gill, UCI Community Resilience Fellow

Week 5 – February 4, Food Production, Consumption, and Security

Gather for a conversation with an all-star panel of campus partners including Gracie Wong who served as a UC Global Food Initiative fellow for 3 years, a program focused on how to sustainably feed our growing global population; Andrea Gutierrez and Ricardo Casillas of the UCI FRESH Basic Needs Hub; Lotus Thai, Sustainability Coordinator for UCI Dining, and Natalie D’Azzo, Wellness & Peer Education Programs Manager at UCI Center for Student Wellness and Health Promotion.

Week 6 – February 11, Recycling and Zero Waste

Anne Krieghoff from UCI Facilities Management and Diana Ramirez, Total Recycling Program Manager for Waste Management, will be joining us to discuss recycling and zero waste at UCI and around Orange County as well as provide expert advice on how you can help start your own recycling programs.

Week 8 – February 25, Energy and Climate Change

Matthew Deines, Senior Planner, UCI Office of Environmental Planning & Sustainability will share about energy conservation efforts on campus and the UCI Climate Action Plan. Liz Fitzpatrick and Hernán Gallo-Cornejo of Strategic Energy Innovations will share about their work through Energize Schools, Energize Colleges, and Climate Corps programs in Southern California.

Week 10 – March 11, Policy and Advocacy

Kol Chaiken, Campus Organizer from UCI CALPIRG will discuss environmental advocacy and how to turn outreach into policy. Abel Ruiz will join us from the CRECE Community Cooperative in Santa Ana. His advocacy work is focused on sustainable community food production and food sovereignty.
