Climate Communications and Engagement Fellow

The application deadline has passed.

Guidelines applicable to the Climate Communications and Engagement Fellow. With supplemental support from the UCI Sustainability Initiative, one $4000 fellowship will go to a Climate Communications & Engagement Fellow. The UC Office of the President seeks to position one student on each campus dedicated to supporting student engagement and communications efforts on campus for the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative and the President’s Global Climate Leadership Council (GCLC).

At UC Irvine, the selected student will work as a fellow at the UC Irvine Global Sustainability Resource Center (GSRC). Under the supervision of GSRC staff, and in conjunction with the GCLC system-wide student representatives, the fellow will

  • communicate with students about campus and UC-wide sustainability goals and programs,
  • assess existing programs and efforts, and
  • engage undergraduate and graduate students in those efforts.

In addition, engagement and communication efforts should enable and empower students to provide feedback about campus and UC-wide sustainability programs to campus staff. The fellow is also expected to participate in a UC system-wide discussion and communication process. This process will be facilitated and overseen by the student representatives to the GCLC. The student representatives will convene regular meetings with fellows from all campuses to:

  • share information and experiences among campus Fellows,
  • empower students to become campus leaders,
  • provide information to the GCLC Student Engagement Working Group about the progress of student engagement efforts, student feedback, and needs on campuses,
  • learn about UC climate and sustainability programs, policies, and opportunities to advance the goals of student engagement in the Carbon Neutrality Initiative and other sustainability programs
  • collaborate with student leaders from the California State University system.

The Climate Communications and Engagement Fellow is required to contribute regularly to the GCLC Student Representative Blog, the GSRC student blog, and other student engagement communication platforms maintained by the GSRC and the GCLC student representatives. The fellowship position is approximately 10-15 hours per week from April 1 – December 4, 2015 (fine print: summer hours are negotiable; fellowship portion funded by the UC Office of the President concludes before the end of summer quarter; fellowship portion funded by the UCI Sustainability Initiative concludes by December 4, 2015).
