Abstract:

Research regarding the contributions of social contexts and policies to health inequities facing Latinos are increasingly salient as several exclusionary social and health care policies have unfolded at national, state, and local levels in recent years. Dr. LeBrón uses multiple methods and community-engaged research strategies to understand and address the contributions of social contexts to health inequities affecting Latinos. Dr. LeBrón will present her research regarding the health implications of restrictive immigration policies and anti-immigrant sentiments that have unfolded in the years following 9/11 for Latinos in Detroit, MI, a northern border city. Additionally, she will discuss her current evaluation of a community- driven policy intervention in Southeast Michigan, which serves to mitigate the effects of an exclusive restrictive state-issued identification policy for residents.

Biography:

Dr. LeBrón’s primary areas of research include the intersections of ethnicity, socioeconomic position, and gender and their implications for the social determinants of health and health inequities among Latino communities. Her more specific focus is on the contribution of social contexts and policies to inequities in health affecting Latinos, and community-engaged strategies for understanding and addressing health inequities.
