The purpose of this activity is to prepare for the overwhelming amount of rainfall expected at the permaculture demonstration site at the UCI arboretum. In this coming winter, we are expecting approximately 35 inches of rain. In a typical, non-drought year we receive 5-7 inches. The extra rain will cause flooding and erosion, uprooting many plants and greatly disturbing habitat. The extra rain also brings an opportunity to effectively capture water in the ground and replenish the water table that is low from the drought. To capture the water and reduce erosion, we will be digging a series of swales to direct the flow of water over the landscape.

Parking: There are very few “free” parking spots available inside the arboretum. We encourage you to carpool or ride your bike. Overflow parking is in lot 90 at $2/hr.

What to Bring: Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, strong closed toe shoes. Gloves and tools will be provided.
