Engaging with Dilemmas in Community-based Research: a workshop for graduate students

A Dilemma Session is a technique for reflecting on ethical conundrums that emerge in a community-based research context.  In this workshop, participants will be given a scenario of a community-based research dilemma, a perspective from which to consider the scenario, and time to reflect with others about what happened, why, how one might respond, and lessons learned.  Participants will then have time to discuss ethical dilemmas they may have experienced or concerns they have about conducting community-based research.

By the end of this workshop, participants will have:

  1. Experienced a dilemma session
  2. Reflected on the ethical dilemmas that come up in community-based research contexts
  3. Reflected on ethical dilemmas they have experienced or anticipate they may experience
  4. Reflected about  tensions between the multiple perspectives present in ethical dilemmas
