In 2013, the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CNI) was established by UC President Janet Napolitano and this initiative pledges that the UC system will become carbon neutral by 2025. Every year, UC students are chosen for Bonnie Reiss CNI Student Fellowships and use this opportunity to conduct research and create projects that advance the CNI at their campus. Another exciting opportunity for the UC community is the Request for Ideas: UC Carbon Offset Projects.
The University of California is requesting students, staff, and faculty of the UC community to propose projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or sequester carbon. UC is seeking two different types of projects that would bring emissions down to zero and ultimately help fulfill the UC CNI:

1) UC-initiated offset projects

2) Projects already on the carbon offset market

Projects can be located anywhere and must meet UC values by resulting in emissions reductions or sequestration that are high quality, reasonable cost, and fulfill our mission of research, education, and public service. Projects should ideally expand or apply UC research, offer educational opportunities to students, advance understanding of scalable climate solutions, provide health and social justice benefits, and directly benefit or have resonance with the UC community and communities surrounding the UC campuses.
