Climate & Environmental Justice Graduate Fellow (2022-2023)

Campus Physical and Environmental Planning is now accepting applications for a Climate & Environmental Justice Graduate Fellow. This fellow will help integrate principles and best practices for climate and environmental justice into UCI climate action planning. Work will include piloting the implementation of the newly adopted “University of California Framework for Incorporating Environmental & Climate Justice into Climate Action.” 

This fellowship will be part of the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) Fellows Program and represent the UC on the cohort of graduate student fellows working on the climate justice pilot project. The student will get to collaborate with climate justice graduate student fellows at other participating UC3 institutions like the University of British Columbia. 

The position will take place from September 2022 to June 2023. Must be a current UCI graduate student or professional student to apply.

  • Update campus climate action planning documents to integrate the Framework’s principles and best practices for climate and environmental justice. 
  • Develop tools and processes (e.g., templates, presentations, guides and additional resources) to help sustainability staff and students implement the framework locally. 
  • Host outreach events to engage the UC community in justice-focused climate action planning on the campus, and gather feedback.
  • Facilitate meetings and focus groups to create metrics for measuring impacts of framework on environmental/climate justice
  • Participate in the Climate and Environmental Justice Subcommittee of the Climate Change Working Group to guide the project, create templates metrics for other campuses to use in replicating the process, and provide recommendations for updating the framework to better serve UC campuses. 
  • Collaborate with other UC students updating climate action plans to develop UC systemwide strategies. 
  • Participate in meetings with the UC3 Climate Justice Graduate Student Fellowship cohort and exchange research, resources, and other learnings with UC3 Climate Justice Graduate Student Fellows doing parallel work at other participating UC3 campuses.
  • Must be a currently enrolled UCI Graduate Student or Professional Student (Law, MBA, etc.)
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental justice 
  • Community engagement and outreach experience
  • Strong writing and oral communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in groups 
  • Available to work approximately 10 hours/week for the 2022-23 academic year
  • Familiarity with the student environmental organizations on campus. 
  • Experience working with environmental/climate justice organizations.
  • Presentation and speaking experience.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage targeted objectives and deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work both independently as well as a member of a team.
  • $11,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year (approximately 10 hours/week or 25% time).
