Summer Institute for Sustainability Leadership (SISL) – Catalyzing a Culture of Sustainability at UCI

The Global Sustainability Resource Center (GSRC), a program of Student Affairs and the Sustainability Initiative, is conducting the second annual Summer Institute for Sustainability Leadership (SISL – pronounced ‘sizzle’). SISL is a three-day residential sustainability leadership immersion program. It offers select incoming first-year and transfer students a chance to meet fellow student leaders and start building leadership skills while learning about sustainability on campus and around the world. SISL empowers undergraduate students with the skills, tools, and relationships to become the next generation of sustainability leaders at UCI. The Institute includes workshops on sustainability, leadership and action-oriented projects that engage students in fun team building activities and community service.

The goal of SISL is to catalyze a culture of sustainability by training the next generation of sustainability leaders as they come to UCI.  UCI is the first campus in the University of California system to offer this kind of sustainability leadership immersion program for incoming college students.

SISL 2014 – August 15-17, 2014

The 2014 SISL mentor and participant application period is now closed.

Are you passionate about the future of the planet?  Do you want to be a leader in creating economic vitality, social justice and environmental balance?

All new undergraduate students at UC Irvine (transfer and first year) for the 2014-15 year are eligible to apply. Criteria for selection include diversity of perspective, activities, and leadership potential. This Initiative is your chance as an incoming first-year and transfer student to meet fellow student leaders and start building your own leadership skills, while learning about sustainability on campus and around the world. SISL, which takes place from Friday, August 15 through Sunday, August 17, on UCI’s campus, is a selective overnight program that challenges participants to think critically about sustainability on campus and in the world.  It will empower undergraduate students with the skills, tools, and relationships to become the next generation of sustainability leaders at UCI. The Institute includes workshops on sustainability, leadership and action-oriented projects that engage students in fun team-building activities and community service.

All admitted students will receive a scholarship valued at $500, which will cover overnight stay in the UC Irvine residential halls, all meals, workshops, and activities.  All participants will receive a free t-shirt and tote bag. However, the program does not cover cost of travel to the campus. Upon acceptance into the program, we will ask for a non-refundable $25 fee that will act as both a deposit and which will go towards one of the meals.
Please know that this Institute is not a substitute for the Student/Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) – the required orientation for new first-year students. You are required to attend a SPOP session during the summer regardless of your participation in SISL.  However, we have scheduled SISL to allow students to attend SPOP before or after the Institute.

Twenty (20) students are selected to attend SISL.  It is our hope that each student participant emerges as an ambassador for sustainability on UCI’s campus.  The application period for both mentor and student participants is now closed. Contact us at sustainability-center@uci.edu with any questions.
