Student Leadership Institute for Climate Resilience (SLICR)

Developed at UCI, the Student Leadership Institute for Climate Resilience (SLICR) is a three-day intensive program that provides participants with an overview of some of the major challenges and opportunities we face in building community climate resilience, as well as tools for action. The program takes place on campus.

SLICR occurs on an annual basis for UCI students. Priority is given to first-year and transfer students, but all UCI students are encouraged to apply. For more information, please review the information below. If you have any questions about the program, please reach out to us.

The SLICR program intends to introduce concepts and skills that advance community climate resilience. Student participants will find ways that climate change, racism, and all social injustice, economic inequality, and our challenged democracy are connected. Leadership skill development curriculum helps participants develop inner awareness and awareness of interdependence of all life. Some of the key concepts and tools covered for changing systems and cultures are intersectionality, decolonization, cultural narratives, collaborative problem solving, and systems thinking. We also provide tools for assessing and addressing one’s own ecological footprint in the context of our communities.

Through the program, student participants gain first-hand experience of UCI’s sustainability landscape and goals while connecting to campus and community leaders. Student participants also get connected to student opportunities in research, education, and community engagement. Finally, student participants develop next-steps regarding their place as sustainability and social justice leaders on campus.

The institute has its roots in UCI’s Student Institute for Sustainability Leadership (SISL) and other trainings that have taken place across UCI. Many SISL alumni have gone on to become key campus leaders in these areas and have shaped their academic pursuits accordingly. UCI’s SLICR curriculum has been recognized as a best practice by the University of California and many other UC campuses have adopted the program. With SLICR trainings happening across multiple UC campuses, a UC-wide cohort of transformative change makers is emerging.
