Green Buildings
UCI is committed to creating places where people can thrive in healthy and sustainable environments. The built environment incorporates design principles prioritizing human wellbeing, environmental sustainability, and innovation. All new construction and renovation projects are built upon Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification principles.
UCI follows UC Policy on Sustainable Practices with all new buildings meeting LEED Gold and striving for LEED Platinum.
What is LEED?
LEED is the standard for green building design and policy. It provides an independent and third-party verification for buildings aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health. Categories include sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental air quality. The UC has adopted LEED as standard for green building policy.
LEED at UCI
UCI currently has a total of 33 LEED certified buildings on the main campus. 22 are LEED Platinum and 11 are LEED Gold. UCI has one of the most LEED-certified Platinum and Gold buildings of new construction on college campuses. All major construction and renovation projects are coordinated by Design and Construction Services in the Division of Finance & Administration (DFA).
