UCI Transportation is offering the League of American Bicyclists two-day Smart Cycling class (previously known as Traffic Skills 101), teaching essential cycling skills:
– Bicycle Safety Checks
– Flat Repair
– Bike Handling
– Crash Avoidance Skills
– Riding legally in traffic

This class is recommended for adults and teens aged 18 and older, this fast-paced, two part course teaches cyclists the principles of bicycle driving.
All participants will receive a League of American Bicyclists “Smart Cycling” student manual ($20 value), Bike Helmet, Multi-Tool, and “Smart Cycling” certificate upon successful completion of the skill-testing and online examinations. This class is being offered for free to UCI students, faculty, staff, and immediate family members. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to become more confident while riding!

Course Overview: Part 1 – Classroom Session
Thursday 5:30pm – 8:30pm
UCI Student Center – Doheney Beach B
The classroom lecture covers bicycle law, gear, basic mechanics, and more. This session is held on Thursday evening prior to the “on-bike” training on Saturday. Even if you have been riding bikes your whole life, you will learn something new. Day 1 will be held from 5:30pm to 8:00pm in the Student Center. No bike is required. Light refreshments will be provided.

Course Overview: Part 2 – On-Bike Session
Saturday 8:00am – 1:30pm
Parking Lot 1C
Prerequisite: Part 1 – Classroom Session
Part 2 covers bike handling skills in a closed parking lot, a bike ride allowing participants to practice their cycling skills in small groups under the watchful eyes of UCI’s League of American Bicyclists-trained LCIs, and an optional online examination. The On-Bike session will be held from 8:00am – 1:30pm. Please bring your bike, helmet, water, and snacks. Meet promptly at Lot 1C to get checked in. Prior to this course, participants must take their bicycle to the UCI Bike Shop for a free maintenance check-up. Mechanical issues have caused delays to our class in the past.
