The Global Sustainability Resource Center (GSRC) is hosting a Aquaponics and worm composting demonstration at the Festival of Discovery to showcase the ‘Campus as a Living Lab’ pathway where students and community members learn seed-to-plate living skills right here on campus.
Aquaponics is a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water.

An Aquaponics system is being developed at the UC Irvine Arboretum. This demo will show-case a model of the larger system at the arboretum. Don’t be fooled though! This tank holds over 500 gallons of water and supports multiple plants and fish.

The worm composing demo will be a great way for kids to get involved. We will show people how they can use worm composting at home. We will also create opportunities for kids to count the worms and get their hands dirty! This display will be fun and interactive.

*Registration is required for volunteers only.
