Create your own natural, plant-based dyes and take home your own project.

The art of natural dyeing using colors derived from plants and minerals is a practice that has brought color to our world since the Stone Age.

Today, choosing natural dyes over the chemical alternatives is more important than ever. Much of our clothing is dyed with synthetic chemicals like sulfur, nitrates, and heavy metals like copper, mercury, and lead. The widespread use of these dyes contributes to many environmental and health impacts including polluted watersheds, unsafe drinking water, wildlife extinction, and human respiratory and skin problems.

Natural dyeing is a sustainable practice and its process and products are gentle to our environment and own Natural Dyeshealth.

Join us for a lecture and hands-on introductory workshop on natural and local plant dyes.

In this workshop we will:

  • Learn about history and future of natural dyes
  • Discover a few commonly found and grown dye plants found in Southern California
  • Process plants for natural dyeing
  • Complete a natural dye project from start to finish

Each participant will dye a few swatches and a handkerchief or small skein of wool to take home!

RSVP and purchase tickets here.

Instructor: Kristin Morrison

Instructor Bio: Kristin is an artist whose work focuses primarily on natural dyes sourced from our local and native ecosystems. She uses natural dyes as a medium for dyeing and printing on textiles, installation, her own apparel line KAM Textiles, and most importantly as a conceptual vehicle to demonstrate how we are all connected to the natural world.
She spent a recent year in New York as a resident artist at The Textile Arts Center exploring her work in a studio setting and developing an exhibition called ‘Urban Forage’ for The Invisible Dog Gallery in Brooklyn. She currently works with LA Fibershed, The Ecology Center, and her own line KAM Textiles, connecting the nodes and telling her story through projects and collaborative work. Learn more about her work on her website.

*We will be spending most of the time outdoors. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed toed shoes that you do not mind possibly getting splashed with natural colors.
